Kite Man evidence to be a breakout star of the Harley Quinn animated series . Here are some of his best quotation to warm up for his twirl - off show .
Screen Rantinterviewed Lorey and Oberg aboutChuck ’s new journeying inKite Man : Hell Yeah! The duo discussed how the spinoff further research Kite Man and other hold up character in the worldly concern ofHarley Quinnand how the show match into the context of James Gunn ’s larger DC Universe .
Gliding Deeper Into Kite Man Outside Of Harley Quinn
Screen Rant : Dean , why is Kite Man the chosen one to headline the first spinoff ofHarley Quinn ?
Dean Lorey : Partially because he was the most unexpected persona . I do n’t think anybody bear that he was the logical next step , but we loved him , we knew the interview loved him , and we really wanted to find a quality that we could take on a journey .
Kite Man ’s a guy wire who has no powers . His papa thinks he ’s unworthy , he ’s begin all these issues , and he just came out of a breakup with Ivy . We wondered , " What if we take this guy and put him up against the heavy threat to the DC creation that ’s ever been , and then tried to figure that out ? " What could a guy like this do in that scenario ? That was exciting to us .

And we just sleep with Matt [ Oberg ] . We wrote Kite Man for Matt initially because we do it him from previous stuff , and then we fell in sexual love with the grapheme . He was only supposed to be in the Bar Mitzvah episode in season 1 and was never plan to be a bigger character , but everybody just fell in love with him . We keep pen for him , and by the time we were look to do another show , we just want to pass clip with him and rent him take center stage . And I ’m really glad we did because I hump the show , and I ’m very proud of it .
Matt , first thing first : how does it experience to go from pal to asterisk ? What vista of Chuck were you most excited to expose in Kite Man , Hell Yeah ?
Matt Oberg : Who among us has not felt look out over and underestimated ? look down upon and express joy at ? That is where this guy comes from . He ’s been dumped , everybody thinks he ’s despicable , and yet he importune on finding the joy and riding the wind . That ’s just a great head blank space to put yourself in for whatever metre you’re able to . To be as optimistic as this poor hombre is such a fun attitude to play I think .
Kite Man, along with his partner Golden Glider, ventures into the world of business by opening Noonan’s, a dive bar in Gotham’s underworld, shadowed by Lex Luthor’s Legion of Doom. The couple balances their criminal exploits with managing the bar, where Gotham’s infamous rogues come to unwind. The series, spinning off from “Harley Quinn,” showcases the humorous and chaotic private lives of these villains, filled with absurd heists and personal drama.
Dean Lorey : He ’s a glass - one-half - full kind of guy cable . There ’s nothing that ’ll whole knock Kite Man down .
Matt Oberg : There are a batch of DC villains that have a lot more move for them , but are they happy late down ? Exactly .
Dean , I know how manyHarley Quinncameos and even support quality we get , which really helps it palpate like a shared universe of discourse . I did notice that a mass of the voice actors have changed apart from Kite Man , Bane , and Harley herself , though . Was that an availableness issue ?
Dean Lorey : It was really that some actor were n’t available . We would have always like to continue with the worker that we in the first place had because they were all great , but sometimes hoi polloi just are n’t uncommitted .
In a way , it ’s kind of merriment to treat it like a Broadway meet that you take on the route . Different company perform the roles , and it ’s fun to see what they bring to it . We loved Giancarlo Esposito as Lex , but then we get Lance Reddick , and he was wonderful . It ’s very pitiful now , obviously , but he recorded almost all of it for us . He did a wonderful job . The new additions were nice , and I in reality have a go at it all those performances .
The Women Of Kite Man: Hell Yeah! — Breaking Down Golden Glider & Malice
Of course , Kite Man is nothing without his other half , Golden Glider , and we have Stephanie Hsu voicing her which is utterly mind - boggling . Take us through that outspoken chemistry .
Matt Oberg : Yeah , we always do it in piece , so to see it all come together and feel like a real relationship is pretty magical . And it ’s all credit to Stephanie . I sort of knew what this guy ’s deal was already , but she had to come in and reckon out a path to harmonize with that .
I do n’t know how difficult that was for her , but if there is chemistry — and I hope there is — I would give her mention for that . She had to meet us where we were .
Dean Lorey : We suppose they were both spectacular . When we were thinking about Golden Glider , we decided that we need a type who was very different from Ivy . Stephanie really help to originate that , and she did a outstanding job . We just love the two of them together . They ’ve create a family for the people that nobody wants .
Dean , Malice is iconic , but she also feels like she wandered in off the readiness of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina . Is she , in fact , Malice Vundabar ? And how did you have the galaxy brain to comprise her into this level ?
Dean Lorey : Even though she has a clear human relationship to Darkseid , she came about separately . We had initially want to put Malice and her kat Cheshire in Harley Quinn season 1 , and I believe we write a full script that involved her doing a good bit of what she does in Kite Man . But for a few reasons , it terminate up pass out as sometimes episodes do .
We never actually produce it , but we always loved the character reference of Malice . So , when we experience that we had an chance to play her in here , it made even more sense because she could be a steady and a waitress at the measure and all of that . It was just something we ’d wanted to do for a recollective clip that was independent of our bringing Darkseid in .
But we loved the character of Darkseid , and we loved the thought of seeing these elephantine , powerful character do very mundane things . We just like the idea of , " What if Darkseid enjoys get a beer when he is on Earth , and what if it ’s at this bar ? " As the series travel along , we spend a good turn of fourth dimension on the relationship between Malice and Darkseid . She ’s like an errant child that he has to care with .
Noonan ’s feels like Cheers for villains , and it becomes a core part of Kite Man ’s identity jolly quickly . Matt , how does the staff and clientele help work the hero - and by hero , I guess I intend villain - Chuck arise into over the season ?
Matt Oberg : I think he ’s not a guy rope who goes out seeking opportunities for heroics or villain - ics or whatever . The opposite is straight ; they come to him , and he ’s force to find the best — or the bad — within himself to meet the moment . That ’s a really fun place to start up for any role . It ’s a very rough-cut sort of hero ’s journeying , I guess .
But it ’s specially true for a Kite Man who would be well-chosen just to be a homebody with Golden Glider and run a bar . But that ’s not how his life end up working . I think that he get not wanting this and continue not want it , but has to meet the moment .
Dean Lorey : He is the very definition of a Reluctant Hero .
Keeping Continuity From Kite Man To Harley Quinn – And Placing Both Within James Gunn’s DCU
Dean , this show is start while we ’re on the cusp of James Gunn ’s DCU , and everyone ’s catch questions about what stories are part of which universe of discourse . I know he ’s not actively part of this show , but is there a grand repository of DC knowledge where you say , " Hey , we ’re doing this , " and other teams react with , " Great , cuz this jives that what we ’re doing over here ? "
Dean Lorey : At the moment I ’m also running Harley Quinn season 5 , so I have a lot to do with the Harley Quinn squad . And there were certain thing that we needed to be consistent . For illustration , the end of Kite Man time of year 1 — in a modest way , but a fun one — conduct into the beginning of Harley Quinn season 5 .
Matt Oberg : As for the larger DCU , I ’m also produce Creature Commandos . I ’m all over the position , so I talk to James quite a bit . First of all , his vision for the DCU is one I ’m super excited about . When we were in the first place lecture about a raft of his work , I was just say , " This is tonally just what we want to do in Harley Quinn and Kite Man . " Tonally . It ’s very coherent . He did n’t have too much to say when we were in production ; we just sort of did it . But we secernate him about it , it get his benediction , and he and Peter Safran would from time to time look at episodes and give us feedback . They ’ve been just nothing but supportive .
Matt , in add-on to Kite Man , you also vocalize several other fictional character onHarley Quinn . Should we be in indigence of Killer Croc again in season 5 , are you up to the challenge ?
Matt Oberg : Yeah , I get to do a few other voice . I do n’t sleep together if I can or should disclose what they are , but that ’s so much playfulness to do that because once you think you ’re out of different voice to do , that ’s when you find the one that ’s been waiting for you the whole meter . That ’s a really fun challenge . Does Killer Crock derive back ? Remind me .
Dean Lorey : I do n’t think he does in Kite Man . But those characters fall in and out now . It just feel like this large rotating casting of people that we use .
Dean , you ’re alsoworking onCreature Commandos . What should DC fans expect from that , and how unlike or similar in tone will it be from Harley Quinn and Kite Man ?
Dean Lorey : Well , I would say it is closer to the vein of something like Suicide Squad or Guardians of the Galaxy . It is more spectacular , it ’s more legal action - oriented and all of that . And it is , I conceive , considered canon in the DC universe . We ’re reckon of that as very much the first show that James Gun ’s DCU is putting out .
If you like James ' clobber — he wrote every single installment , and they ’re corking — you ’ll like Creature Commandos . I mean , it ’s very much his visual sense . It exists in a world different from Harley Quinn , but it ’s rattling and comic .
The first 2 episodes ofKite Man , Hell Yeah!are useable to stream on Max , with new instalment arriving every Thursday .
