Kelly Fremon Craig on Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret
Screen Rant : What were the biggest challenge of adapting such an iconic Holy Writ into a flick ?
Kelly Fremon Craig : I think one of the large challenges was how to deliver the timelessness of it . Because the matter is , Judy wrote it in 1970 , but when I take it in 1990 , I had no theme it was n’t written that same year ; she ’s written in a way that it feels so contemporary any decade you learn it , and that ’s easier done in a book than it is in a picture .
Because in a picture , you have to anchor yourself in a place ; in a year . A lot of what I was thinking about and one of the fully grown challenges was : how do we congeal ourselves in 1970 , but also find like we could sort of be any year ? Where it would have this sorting of general nostalgia that made everyone remember their own puerility , even if they did n’t grow up in that decennary .
What were the most important chemical element from the Holy Scripture that you really want to ensure came through in the movie ?
Kelly Fremon Craig : The big thing is actually just how the Scripture makes you find , so that was really the crowing one . And then there were little things that are in reality braggy things , like " I must increase my bust . " I knew we had to get that right . We could not shaft that up , because that is the one thing everyone remembers about the Word . No one has forget that , so that was of import .
Are there any scene that you especially relate to the most from your own puerility ?
Cast of Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret
Kelly Fremon Craig : I really relate to the first boy - girl party being so ill at ease . [ Laughs ] Where nobody quite knows what to do with themselves , or what to do with their manus as they ’re standing there ; the whole thing is so , so awkward . So I loved filming that . I bed filming Margaret ’s first candy kiss in the lav ; I love how heart pounding it is , I feel like I ’m there with her every time I watch the scene .
Are there any other standout moments from filming , like scenes that bend out really well ?
Kelly Fremon Craig : One of the other scenery I had so much fun filming was when Margaret stuffs her bra with socks and then dances around her room . That was so much merriment , because our tv camera adult female had the photographic camera and was just following her around the way for 20 minutes , everybody was sweating . [ Laughs ] And we were just reach her different prop and have her do all sorts of stuff , and it was just pure fun ; it ’s one of the most fun thing I ’ve ever shoot .
