House of the Dragon

admonition : contain spoiler for House of the Dragon time of year 2 , sequence 5 .

Summary

As the detritus and ash from the Battle at Rook ’s Rest settee , House of the Dragonseason 2 , episode 5 is a quieter installing , but also an crucial one . TheDance of the Dragonshas fully started now after the event of episode 4 , but this is a chance for both sides of the civil war to valuate their wounds and regroup . While they ’re doing that , Daemon slump further into his Harrenhal incubus , with some very surprising tale pick along the style .

Cast

Matt Smith Is Great In One Of The Biggest Episodes For Daemon Yet

Season 2, Episode 5 Is Very Daemon-Centric

Daemon ’s visual sense at Harrenhalget weird than ever , as instalment 5 ’s instalment includes … having sexual urge with his ( long drained ) mother . Alyssa Targaryen , Daemon ’s mother , die out when he was around three - age - former , so there ’s perhaps a common sense of Daemon wanting to find the motherly love he missed out on , while also searching for a adult female who will take care of him and feed in his own ego and desires . It ’s certainly an , erm , interesting panorama , although even a flake much incest - wise , even for the Targaryens .

[ Smith ] gets to be absolutely unworthy and chesty and natural and all of Daemon ’s other witching quality , and yet also manages to find the fiber ’s exposure …

That vision drives the ease of Daemon ’s arc , really , as he run on to announce that he want to be male monarch - and not world-beater consort . Matt Smith is superb here , and clearly having a majuscule time . He let to be utterly slimy and arrogant and ill-mannered and all of Daemon ’s other witching qualities , and yet also pull off to find the fictional character ’s exposure ( not to advert mental confusion ) , which is significant to making this story work .

I do n’t believe everything here works dead , in part because there ’s so much happening to Daemonwithin a unmarried episode . He goes from threatening the Brackens to coming up with a plan with the Blackwoods , which is then executed , and then the Riverlords angrily fall upon him , without a real sense of the passage of sentence . It also make some key changes to the script in him need to be top executive rather than reckon Rhaenyra rule and , while that ’s not inherently a regretful thing , the panel is out on how that will work for the story going frontward .

Alys and Daemon ’s scenes in House of the Dragon have been quite orphic , and their latest interaction may bond into an previous Bran Stark book theory .

The Fallout From Rook’s Rest Sets Up Intriguing King’s Landing Storylines

Aemond Is In Charge - So Now What Happens?

In terms of the side effect from the Battle at Rook ’s Rest , I think the scenes in King ’s Landing are where the show really nails it . There ’s plenty of drama givenKing Aegon could still die , and Aemond gets to go even more full throttle into villain mode as he get to take restraint like he ’s always wanted . Ewan Mitchell and Olivia Cooke , once again , do great workin their scenes , and it begins to show the fissure in Alicent . Despite the bad she ’s done , Cooke does make you feel for her .

It ’s always great to get a sense of the " real " masses who are living and break down underneath the rule of the nobles , those who can not find out nutrient while their rulers squabble over a big chair .

The scene with the smallfolk were peculiarly good , because it ’d be so light to overlook them . It ’s always heavy to get a sense of the " real " people who are living and die underneath the rule of the Lord , those who can not find intellectual nourishment while their rulers squabble over a big chair . It does a nice caper showing the escalating conflict and tension among the residents of King ’s Landing , and I look frontward to seeing when that finally churn over . Plus , as visuals go , a dragon ’s head being cart through the streets is a very striking and muscular one , ill omen or not .

Daemon (Matt Smith) with his hand against a wall in House of the Dragon season 2, episode 5

Between Game of Thrones , House of the Dragon , and the lore from George R.R. Martin ’s Holy Scripture , these dragons stand out as the biggest to vagabond Westeros .

House Of The Dragon Struggles To Balance Its Characters

Corlys Velaryon, In Particular, Deserved Even More Screen Time Here

House of the Dragon ’s castis a turgid one and no sequence can do everyone DoJ , so you just have to trust that it balances out across the class of the season . In term of Team Black , it work out well for Jacaerys this episode , who comes to the fore more , and we get a much cracking sense of who he isas a character . Rhaenyra herself is n’t given quite as much focus , yield the amount of Daemon , but gets a few solid two - handers and the variety of conversations that so often labour the show , which Emma D’Arcy obviously cop .

The one character I would have like more of is Corlys Velaryon . Steve Toussaint has done an fantabulous job with the character , and his scene with Baela here is very near , but following on fromRhaenys Targaryen ’s death , I think even more focusing on him would ’ve been great . This was really the time to put a glare on his grapheme , which would ’ve been deserving sacrificing or delay some other scenes for if necessary , as I consider his brokenheartedness could have been more powerful and allow for an even great sense of going .

yet , this was another challenging instalment ofHouse of the Dragon , with plenty of strong character oeuvre within . The haunting of Harrenhal continues to be brilliantly atmospheric and foreign , and it do sense to have a few slightly smaller episodes ( in terms of scale ) after the conflict the previous week , but there are heap of potentially volatile storyline building nicely .

Taking place about 172 years before the events ofGame of Thrones , House of the Dragontells the tale of the rise of the Targaryens , the only category of dragonlords to survive the Doom of Valyria . The popular HBO spinoff show first star Milly Alcock and Emily Carey as Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower before they were supersede by Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke , who act the older versions of the characters . Also star in the series is Matt Smith ( Prince Daemon Targaryen ) and Paddy Considine as Rhaenyra ’s father , King Viserys Targaryen .
