The lead has always been Merideth Grey . But imagine giving that to Owen who has fit through enough rigour to take that mantle and run with it . Owen now has two kids he shares with two unlike women at the same hospital . That right there is enough to keep the writers busy in terms of storylines .
Owen has his ups and down just as much as Meredith . In the early stages , Owen was n’t well - likedbut he has more than turn that around . A single Padre could be a vast turn point in the show and help usher in a new era .
Amelia Shepherd (Can’t)
Amelia does have a majuscule level but the issue there is that the writer have strung her plot line as far as they can . Now , with a babe on the manner and a new relationship with Link , Amelia appear to be in any dissimilar lane than she already was while married to Owen .

Maggie has the voltage to take over the lead fictional character if her sister were to leave the show . As one of the top supporting charactersonGrey ’s Anatomy , it ’s time she bring in a higher billing . Maggie has had an interesting backstory but the author have yet to fully let her shine .
possibly if Meredith is not in the picture , a huge portion of the show can focus on her growth as a operating surgeon and possibly image out a direction for her to link with Webber , and a stable love life history .
Miranda Bailey (Can’t)
Miranda Baileyhas rank high amongst top characters onGrey ’s Anatomysince Season 1 . While sort of a dictator at first , Miranda has since taken on a motherly role to the immature generation . With Zola grown , she can now play the role of her female parent while Meredith plays the purpose of Ellis . If Meredith does have dementia , this would be a really cool fashion of having the story come full lot for the fans .
Alex Karev (Can’t)
Theloss of the ever - democratic Alex Karevwas a huge blow to fans ofGrey ’s Anatomy . With Christina gone , Alex became Merideth ’s person . Alex was special . He entered as the screw up of the initial form and worked his agency to Chief . He found love again and just when it was all come together , it was over .
