The ensembleShōguncastincludes Hiroyuki Sanada , Cosmo Jarvis , Anna Sawai , Tadanobu Asano , Takehiro Hira , Tommy Bastow , and Fumi Nikaido .
On the " Not A web log " luck of his web site , George R.R. Martinshared a lengthy post praising FX’sShōgunfollowing the comparisons toGame of Thrones . After divvy up his general thoughts on adaptations of literary works into films and goggle box serial , the source went on to congratulations FX’sShōgun , which he view a superb adaptation of Clavell ’s novel , while compare it favorably to the 1980 miniseries star Richard Chamberlain . Everywhere you look , there are more screenwriter and producers eager to take great tale and “ make them their own . ” It does not seem to matter whether the source material was written by Stan Lee , Charles Dickens , Ian Fleming , Roald Dahl , Ursula K. Le Guin , J.R.R. Tolkien , Mark Twain , Raymond Chandler , Jane Austen , or … well , anyone . No matter how major a author it is , no matter how great the book , there always seems to be someone on hand who thinks he can do better , eager to take the news report and “ amend ” on it . “ The record is the book , the plastic film is the film , ” they will recite you , as if they were read something unfathomed . Then they make the story their own .
They never make it well , though . Nine hundred ninety - nine times out of a thousand , they make it worse .
Once in a while , though , we do get a really good adaptation of a really good Word of God , and when that happen , it deserves hand clapping .
I can came across one of those instances lately , when I binged the newfangled FX version of SHOGUN .
Must confess , I was dubitable when I first heard they were make another version of the Clavell novel . It has been a farseeing time , a long long longsighted time , but I read the script when it first came out in the belated 70s and was mightily impressed . ( I really demand to give it a reread one of these daytime , but there are so many book of account , so little time ) . And the 1980 miniseries star Richard Chamberlain as the Anjin was a landmark of long human body boob tube , right up with with ROOTS ; why do it over again , when that version was so honest ?
I am glad they did , though . The new SHOGUN is superb . easily than Chamberlain ’s version , you ask ? Hmmm , I do n’t recognize . I have not ascertain the 1980 miniseries since , well , 1980 . That one was great too . The absorbing thing is that while the old and new version have some significant differences — the subtitles that make the Nipponese dialog intelligible to English speaking viewer being the biggest — they are both close to the Clavell novel in their own way . I reckon the author would have been pleased . Both old and new film writer did honor to the source material , and give us terrific adaptations , resisting the pulsation to “ make it their own . ”
But do n’t take my intelligence for it . follow it yourself .
Shōgun, released in 2024, is set in Japan during 1600 at the onset of a significant civil war. It follows Lord Yoshii Toranaga as he battles political adversaries on the Council of Regents, while a European ship mysteriously appears in a nearby fishing village, complicating the tides of power.
act as , directing , set design , costume … it ’s all splendid here . Along with the writing .
And if SHOGUN is a grown enough striking , maybe the same squad will adapt some of Clavell ’s other novel .
Shōgun time of year 1 ’s finale overthrow expectations in the best way , revealing Lord Toranaga ’s true goal and setting up a continuation of his history .
