Bryant Reif on The Mysterious Benedict Society Season 2
Screen Rant : FuseFX has been a part of many wonderful projects throughout the years , including unity at Disney+ . How did your involvement withMysterious Benedict Societycome about ?
Bryant Reif : Short answer , I was assign to the show . The long answer is that the VFX for the first time of year of MBS was done by our sister studio FOLKS which is based in Montreal but for season two they decided to move most of the product to Los Angeles where FuseFX has its flagship studio . Jean Lapointe was the VFX supervisory program from the first time of year , and he outride on to supervise the 2d season as well .
This was an idealistic situation because it not only helped keep continuity between seasons , but he also help help both FuseFX and FOLKS working together on some of the VFX shots that required some of the assets that FOLKS progress for season one . Stonetown being the primary exercise . Needless to say I was very excited to be a part of the VFX team on the Mysterious Benedict Society . From the very first flavour it was apparent that this was a special show .
Creating a period of time - exact setting is often associated more with practical consequence than digital . What do you feel are some of the lesser - cognize or lesser - realized aspects the VFX team are tasked with for earned run average - appropriate show ?
Bryant Reif : Well , a caboodle of research goes into a show like this one . But that means knowing on the nose what it is you should be explore . So you have to become a student of that era by not just see out the make and model of cars that people drive or the clothing style that people wore , but also the type of engines that were used in passenger dirigibles from that era and the rate at which the propeller reel for example . Or how fast did the Queen Mary move , and how many feet above ocean level is the Promenade pack of cards ? Knowing all these small details really assist to craft a world that makes the audience sense like they belong in that era . And it helps if you really enjoy doing deep dives into esoteric topics like that , which I do . I can go down rabbit holes all day . Ha .
What was one of your favorite element to add to life forThe Mysterious Benedict Society ?
Bryant Reif : I really enjoyed the shot that showcased The Shortcut . There were just so many fun little point that our team bring that are so small you scarcely notice them singly , but they all work together to really give the ship character . At one point , Jean ( the VFX Supervisor ) was unhappy with how all the windows looked , so we build out interior place with desk , chairs , lamps , etc . Then we added groups of CG people behind the curtains walk about the interior area . You could n’t even see them straightaway , but it was enough to modify how the kindling reacted to give the windows some added sprightliness .
The Shortcut is one of the most stunning sets throughout the show , especially as someone who rise up in the South Bay of California with the Queen Mary . What was the process of researching that ship , visiting it , and finding a way to bring FuseFX ’s vision of The Shortcut to life ?
Bryant Reif : Lots and lots and lots of extension pic . All the live - action scene were filmed on the Queen Mary itself . They had fix dressed it to look like the flagship sea liner of the " Green Zephyr Lines , " complete with stigmatize sunshade and pack of cards chairs , and other details . So that render us a guide for what we should be twin . We jump by first building the canonical structure of Queen Mary itself . The Queen Mary is a famous ship , so there were plenty of photos to be found online , but I also had a bunch of personal picture that I had take of the Queen Mary . I had visited it several times and even spent the night there once .
This turn out to be very fortunate because , due to COVID , the Queen Mary was closed to the public , and we were n’t permit to go back on the ship and fritter away any specific exposure we take , but we had mass of references . So from there , we spay our Queen Mary model to agree what had been filmed on circle and to give The Shortcut a unique look and design . This required our artists to pay close attention to the denotation picture taking . But the Queen Mary is nearly 90 years old and had n’t sail since 1967 , and The Shortcut was meant to be brand unexampled .

The Queen Mary has been for good moored in Long Beach , CA , since 1967 . So all the alive - action shot where we can see off into the horizon , we could actually see business district Long Beach and the still H2O of the Port of Long Beach . And this is supposed to be in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean . So we brought in Fuse ’s FX section , led by Kent Lidke , to spring up the sea systems and fluid simulations that we needed to sire the ocean undulation and also the ship ’s viewing .

We were provided a fairly simple sketch of what the dirigible should bet like and asked to arrive up with a fully fleshed - out design based on that . So it was back to researching . We draw a lot of inspiration from British airships from the 1930s ( ex . , HM Airship R100 ) . From there , we deck that purpose and add a luxury passenger cabin that match the flavor and palpate of the interior set that was built on the sound stage .
We also applied the same " sumptuousness " treatment to the rest of the dirigibles .
