Casper Kelly & Dave Willis on YPFGTH: The Cartoon
Screen Rant : I ’m not even gon na lie in , I ’ve been a vast fan ofYour Pretty Face Is Going To Hellsince it first launched on Adult Swim almost 10 yr ago . When I see that it was incite into animate shortstop , I thought that was such a great telephone extension of the holding . How did the melodic theme for that come about for you both ?
Dave Willis : I think ab initio , we sort of always saw the show as a live - action cartoon , and I conceive hoi polloi had done animated devil in the past times , so we think , " Would n’t it be funny to almost kind of dothe Jon Lovitz SNL thing , where we just paint them red , and occasionally you see red on their collar ? " But then , we were order the show was go to stop , that they were going to let us do a closing curtain , and we compose a finale . Then COVID hit , we could n’t fritter away the finale , and then they salute us with an estimation to do these short pants , and we were like , " Yeah , that ’s cool . "
Casper Kelly : citizenry do tell us that of all the live - action mechanism Adult Swim shows , ours might be the most like a cartoon , so yeah , we took it and run with it .
The live - action episodes were already not super long . They were about 10 - 15 minutes apiece , but what was it like for you both assay to get hold a way to translate the show to an even poor metier of these 3 - 5 bit sketches ?
Casper Kelly : I do n’t think that ’s ever very hard . [ Laughs ] I always feel like our 11 - minute of arc shows are just padded out 3 - minute shorts in some ways , but you know , it ’s comic , we have an annual small Five Points Halloween parade in town , and I generally see half of the work party for the show represent as graverobber and zombie and stuff . I saw one of our effect artists , Chris Brown , and he had envision the short circuit , and he was like , " I ’m happy youchose to do the Human Centipedein the doughnut form as an animated thing , I think that would have presented many challenges for us in a lively - natural action format ! Jameson , my just world ? " [ Chuckles ]
It seems like it would be a jolly fantastic matter to try in live - action . Were some of these segments things that you had planned , or were ideas that you want to do for the live - military action show , or were these developed exclusively for animation ?
Casper Kelly : I think they were just developed for the animation . When we learned we were doing a cartoon , we decided we really wanted to tilt into that medium and the advantages of that medium and really go for it . Like with The Human Centipede circle , or with the Immortal Kombat with different finishing move , that would be harder to do in alive - action . So , we desire to go for it , and we arrest Christy Karacas , who we were a big buff of , to just give it that rough style , but we geared these for animation . Or " Sexting , " I guess we could have gotten a manakin to do that , but it probably work considerably as a sketch .
Dave Willis : I think they were all original , we just sort of got together and talked about ideas . I did always require to do a crossroads one , because that ’s just such a cliché , and it was kind of fun to represent all those famous guitarist . you may do it much more easily in invigoration blank . Of of course when we started this , Eddie Van Halen had just latterly give out and our honcho was like , " Is that gon na be reverential by the time we ’re done ? " " It ’d be ancient history . "
How did you go about choose which musicians to burlesque for that episode ?
Dave Willis : I think Eddie Van Halenis of our dissimilar era , and of our earned run average , at least , like I can recall writing his name on a trapper custodian , so that speaks to my age . But , I believe he ’d just die , so that might have been an inhalation there , but then the other people were just sort of people you imagine of as the all - meter great guitar players , and the guy who was spearheading the shorts , Matt Harrigan was a huge Deadhead , and he was very particular about which Jerry Garcia guitar was animated , and how it was to be reap . We use a line predict " slip your face , " which signify something to deadhead , of which I am not . So , there ’s little heavy metal Easter eggs in there throughout .
They all fit very well for the medium . Since you mention theMortal Kombat , I love that segment , as a devotee of that enfranchisement , it killed me . Did you both have any finishing move in special that you loved to bring to the show ?
Casper Kelly : You make ta love a off-white gallows , and I eff the idea that Troy ripped it off from Dizzay , that made me laugh . And then Eddie , it does n’t really affect Eddie , he ’s matte so much pain before that it ’s just another daylight punching in the clock for him .
Dave Willis : I actually like the just very soft punch into the butt . [ Laughs ] If we had it to do over again , we should ’ve maybe just stayed all-inclusive , and then he just punches that butt once and then perforate the butt again and again , and it go bad nowhere . [ Chuckles ]
I love that all the cast are back for this as well . Voiceover work ’s become big since the pandemic hit , but what was it like when you generate to send the cloth out to everybody and finally get them back to record everything again ?
Dave Willis : It was nice , we did a Zoom room that was in the heart of COVID and read the finale that we , maybe , someday , will be able to shoot , and it ’s nice . It was a unlike medium for a lot of those cat , I ’ve personally try from Craig Rowin a routine of times , he ’s very excited , I do n’t recall he ’d ever done any sort of voiceover workplace . Henry ’s all over the place , I reverse on Sirius XM the other night and heard Henry doing a whole piece , and I was like , " Is this Last Podcast on the Left , or is he now a DJ sometimes ? " Sometimes he ’d holler , and we could n’t take the elbow room out of it , and you ’re like , " Yeah , because he ’s recording this in his toilet in Silver Lake , " or whatever . But yeah , I was happy that we were not ending the show , how we were continuing it , and we felt like it suffer , too you know , I palpate like it can live on as a cartoon .
Casper Kelly : It was prissy to play with some new the great unwashed , too , like bringing on Pete Holmes , who ’s an angel , and I was very happy that the mould was o.k. with being pull back in a very unflattering way . It just is mirthful that way , add on some lbf. to these guy , make them look rougher . One other Easter egg is we ’ve had some , I do n’t even know if I ’m theorize to say this , but we ’ve had some cast phallus conk out . So , we tried to honor them by birth them in the background , some of them .
Dave Willis : I opine we could say that , we had V.C. and Johnny , guys that start as extras for us that we just kind of fall in love with their personalities , and their decision to be in the show . Every day , they ’d get there ahead of time , get paint up , and some Day , they ’d just be out there eating luncheon , and our line manufacturer would go , " Well , we ’re not going to get to this shoot today , so you go on home . "
So they ’ve been painted ruddy for like eight hours , they get luncheon , and they got a day pace , and we got to a point with some of those guys where we make to know them , we got to love them , and we were like , " Hey , we ’re gon na write a argument for them . " Before you know it , guys like V.C. and Johnny , Johnny had a whole episode that he starred in , and V.C. would have some of my favorite strain in the whole serial publication . When they passed on , it was of course very , very sad , and it was great that we get to honour them by putting them in the background in animated mannequin .
That definitely entices me to go back and rewatch these shorts to try and discover them . I know that you were able to do that for them .
Dave Willis : William Tokarsky started as —
Casper Kelly : He ’s still alive , he ’s alive !
Dave Willis : Yes , William is live , but he started as a background guy wire , and then Chris made him the champion of Too Many Cooks . We run into him in town every so often , and people go , " Hey , Too Many Cooks ! " and he ’s like , " I was guess to do two hours of Jumanji , and Jack Black made it , so I was on it for a hebdomad . "
Casper Kelly : He ’s a monotone - out working actor .
Dave Willis : He is , he ’s in Welcome to Flatch , he ’s got a batch of hooey going on , and he started as a background guy for us .
That shows the strength of his talent he was able-bodied to operate his way up like that . You ’ve blab about the show dwell on in an animated frame , and I do it that you do have the finis write . Do you have theme for more shorts for the time to come , or have you had talks about doing more shorts in the futurity ?
Casper Kelly : Yes , we have musical theme , but we have not had dialogue . I cerebrate I can verbalize for Dave that we would jazz to do more . This was really fun , it ’s very fun .
Dave Willis : Yeah , it ’s fun , it ’s fun character , the world ’s already built , there was nothing difficult about just translating it from springy - action mechanism to animation .
