Summary
I ’ve been diddle video secret plan since I was a Kyd , but militant trading card games were almost entirely Modern to me when I signed up for a competitiveDisney Lorcanatournament at my local game store . As such , I did n’t really get it on what to look , but the less - than - leading experience unquestionably learn me a few moral for my next outcome -if I ever find brave enough to pass , that is .
Disney Lorcanashares a lot of similarities withMagic : The Gathering , though instead of aiming to abbreviate your opponent ’s life sum you ’re building up your own supplying of Ink , with the aim of touch 20 Lore before your opponent(s ) . As a somewhat young release from Ravensburger ( first launching August 2023 ) , I was in on the launch from mean solar day one , picking up steer online andbuilding out a deckand strategy that felt ripe for me . After a few calendar month of pack of cards tweaks and practice with friends , I was ready for atournament . Or at least , I thought I was . Here ’s what I learn .

6I Didn’t Know The House Rules
Key Components Of Polite Play
make only playedLorcanawith Quaker and look on others encounter online meant I missed out on key etiquette for competitory TCG sport . My rotund 1 opponent patiently explain what " cut the deck " was as we swop decks and sliced them in half . He was also very kind in offer me one of his ( many ) dice when I realized I had n’t brought enough damage counters to put up his barrage of attack , and he also insist on judder handwriting when we were done .
While not knowing the very basics of polite period of play in a competitive TCG sure was n’t the end of the existence , I do finger it undermined me as a competitive player . When we sit down down and I did n’t bang the etiquette , I pass on off a clear planetary house to my adversary that I was n’t going to be serious contention for him . From that very minute , I was n’t to be take gravely . Lesson learned : next clock time , I ’ll be the one offering the die .
5My Deck Simply Wasn’t Ready
Doomed To Fail
At the sentence of the tourney I had a nicely refined Amber / Amethyst deck which I was quite proud of . I’d done my research and I knew the majority of role player would be using either Ruby / Amethyst or the ever - popular SteelSong ( Amber and Steel)- both toughened deck to exhaust . However , I prepared consequently , building my deck of cards found on those that had already seen tournament wins via deck lists that had been shared online . While an Amber / Amethyst was a less popular deck for private-enterprise child’s play , I was softly confident in my origination , which used subs of some of the rarer and dear add-in fo a budget - favorable version .
I expect that the degree of research I ’d put into my deck of cards would be sufficient to at least present a challenge to my opponent , but when I sat down for Round 1 and kept drawing duds I agnise a fatal flaw of my deck that the internet had n’t prepared me for : if I did n’t draw those 1 - cost card early enough , I ’d be out before I knew it . Sure enough after a grating two turns for me , my opposition sped ahead and took the profits before the protester on the left of me were even midway through . My deck of cards buckled under the pressure of my opponent ’s Ruby / Amethyst , andmy sureness took a existent strike .
4Investing In Your Deck Is Key
I Hadn’t Put My Money Where My Mouth Was
When I act onto Round 2 with a young antagonist , I was surprised to see she had the same deck of cards character as me : Amber / Amethyst . Immediately , she suffered the same problem I did in not pulling thecards her custom deck was built for , and I started to speed ahead and gouge up Ink quickly . The goal line was in mint for me when she suddenly lined up the cards her deck was created for : three of four Rapunzel - Gifted With Healing cards came out in speedy succession , healing some of her heavy and allowing a approximate - infinite calling card draw for her .
It was snug , but she got the win . Her Rapunzels came in just in time to bring me down . More significant than her winnings was what I learned : my opposite had put down some real money when put in her deck . Each Punzie was go for around £ 25 - 30 GBP ( $ 31 - $ 38 USD ) at the prison term , and those were just four of her cards . Some spry math on my part put her pack of cards value at over £ 200 GBP ( $ 254 USD ) from only the card game I ’d see , whereas mine was less than a twenty-five percent of that thanks to some of my budget - friendly hero sandwich . I learned that competitive play does n’t hail chintzy , and if I really wanted to continue pro play , I ’d demand to start investing .

3My LGS Had Real Pros
Some TCG Players Are Gods Among Men
One of the main reason I decided to go to aLorcanatournament was the newness of the plot . Unlike the now - decades oldPokémonandMtG , I feltLorcanawould have a more even playing basis . I assume everyone was starting in the same place knowledge - wise . This was a mistake . My local biz store already had a defined pecking order of competitive players at the time I signed up , and the Top Dogs were well - set up by the metre I wave in .
During Round 1 I was seated next to the two professional of previousLorcanatournaments and the Old World chat between my antagonist and them quickly showed thatthese two players wereundefeatable . They were both seasonedMtGplayers with years of TCGs under their belt , andLorcanawas a breeze for them . They ’d built up a repute as the revered players of each LGS event , the two that nobody else wanted to be paired with because even sitting opposite them meant a sure - fireLorcanaloss .
I was state they took home the trophy every week , and that they were already growing blase ofLorcanabecause of how " gentle " they found it . For fresh TCG role player like me , they made a profits impossible , which in turning made me palpate more shoot down than I was already starting to palpate . Maybe if I ’d known more go in , this fact would n’t have felt like the blow it was .
2Competitive TCG Is Ruthless
No Concessions For Anyone
While competitiveLorcanawas a new realm for me , I did have one troll of professionalPokémon TCGwhen I entered the Pokémon League for one individual plot at around the age of 10 . I make headway that secret plan , but I ca n’t aid but wonder if the stave member I ’d play against let me have the winnings on account of being a child . My firstLorcanatournament knocked that sentiment mightily out of me when I see a vernal miss repeatedly get pass over out by her opponents .
Around the long time of 9 or 10 and dressed up in her finest Disney gearing , this youngLorcanafan started out the event the same manner I did : radiate and raring to go . She did n’t quite leave the same elbow room I did ( more on that below ) , but the last time I saw her at the effect she seem ready to cry . I had hop-skip those she got mate with might lease her have a win to urge her spirit and maybe help go on to motivate her along her competitive TCG journey , but no . When I later checked the score via the very helpful app , she ’d lose all three games .
I realise that competitive TCG is just that -competitive- but I also believe that younger people trying new game hobbies should be boost . Especially if those hobby are something as brave as a competition against a crowd of unfamiliar adults . I really hope she ’s still playingLorcana- hopefully at a less ruthless local game shop .
1And Then They Asked Me To Leave
Game Over
When I entered the tournament I assume I ’d leave a winner or a unsuccessful person , preferably the former . I expected to have met some nice mass , played some games , and left on estimable terms . That ’s not quite how it played out . When I went to the desk to find out my opposition for Round 3,I was told that someone had go forth and that there was no - one for me to play in Round 3 . I did n’t actually know this was a possible issue , and when I later relay the story to booster , I was told that typically a staff member would step in so I could at least have played the three game I ’d signed up - andpaid- to play . regrettably I was n’t give that pick .
Instead , I was told I could sit and await for everyone else to play Round 3 and then watch the resultant role and prizes being given out , but that even with a Default Win from this inauspicious occurrence , I was told I would n’t rank myself due to my abyssal score . I asked when the prizes might be given out and was told it would be in around 90 minute , so I decided to just pack up my deck and exit . It was a really disappointing end to an issue that I learned a lot from , but did n’t needs love .
Will I Enter A Competitive TCG Tournament Again?
I have n’t yet polished off my bruised ego and returned for anotherLorcanatournament , but now with four sets issue and hundred of cards , I feel like I ’d never be capable to contrive a pack of cards and scheme to give me an border against my local pros . That ’s not to say I ’ll never play a competitive TCG again though - my experience taught me a mint , and I ’d love another injection at the big league . I ended up playing two very fun games ofLorcanawith two people who were a pleasure to play against , but maybe I should be sticking tocasual play and card collectingfor a little longer .
